Lesson 39--Break Down

Phrasal Verb: Break down

When a machine, like a car, photocopier or vending machine, stops working we say it breaks down.

e.g.      My car broke down on the highway.
The copier keeps breaking down in the middle of the job.
Luckily the printer hasn't broken down yet.

The noun form of this is breakdown.

e.g.      The machine had a breakdown during the night.
A breakdown happened due to a power surge.

  1. I like the picture for the topic :) The Old Soviet Car "Moskvich" which actually does not merit to be called a CAR :)

  2. With a "car" like that, it was probably better to buy two of them. You could drive one while you were fixing the other one. I wonder what the worst car ever made was? Glad to hear any opinions on this.

  3. Hm, maybe this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd5ka91fkDo This is a really horrible car, however being so uncomfortable it does not break down so often, actually.

  4. That's pretty good--I alway enjoy Top Gear. I thought maybe the Yugo was the worst car. In North America the worst car is the AMC Pacer, or Gremlin. Truly horrible. I couldn't even pick one video (there are too many)
